Canon Redefines Videography With Its Two New EOS R-Series Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, today announced the launch of two brand new full-frame mirrorless cameras under the EOS-R lineup: the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6. Aimed at advanced amateurs and professionals, both cameras are designed to provide a high-quality, high-speed shooting experience.

The Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 are equipped with the new DIGIC X image processor and Dual Pixel AF II that provides major improvements in auto-focusing capability, fast continuous shooting speed of up to 20 fps with in-body IS for remarkable results. Both models are also coupled with dual card slots for higher-transfer speed to provide smooth continuous shooting experience.

Canon EOS R5

The latest additions are set to deliver above and beyond for advanced and professional users with their breakthrough technologies and features.  The all-new EOS R5 is Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera with the ability to record 8K videos, which marks a remarkable achievement by Canon.

The incredible processing power of DIGIC X, coupled with the ultra-fast CFexpress media, enables the Canon EOS R5 to record 8K movies at a smooth 30fps with full sensor readout. Shooting in 8K allows flexibility in cropping during post-production even for 4K delivery, allowing more creative expression through zooming or panning.

With a 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor that is approaching medium-format resolution territory, the Canon EOS R5 is able to meet the high demands of professionals. From large format commercial printing, capturing intricate details in landscape photography, and even intensive cropping frequently required in wildlife photography, the Canon EOS R5 is able to do them all.

The new additions to the EOS-R lineup will not miss a moment even in dimly lit situations with the EOS R5’s low luminance Auto Focus sensitivity of EV -6 and the EOS R6’s at EV -6.5 — a condition so dark that the human eye finds difficult to see.

Canon EOS R6

The Canon EOS R6 is equipped with a 20-megapixel full-frame sensor, which is inherited from the flagship EOS-1DX Mark III. Sharing the same image sensor and image processor as the EOS-1DX Mark III, the EOS R6 is capable of achieving a native ISO of up to 102,400 (expandable to 204,800).

The ability to shoot 4K videos at up to 60fps, and slow motion at 120fps in Full HD are present on the Canon EOS R6 together with the DIGIC X image processor, all without crop, similar to the EOS R5. The beauty is that Dual Pixel CMOS AF II will be available in all resolutions and formats for both these cameras, providing major improvements in auto-focusing capabilities. All these video features make the cameras great tools for video makers and hybrid shooters.

For the first time ever in the EOS lineup, AF coverage area has been expanded to cover the entire sensor (100% x 100%) on both models. This means focusing is available on any part of the frame, making focusing on subjects at the far edges a breeze.

Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 can enable AF Priority mode for either people or animals. In addition, the cameras are able to recognise not just the body, but the head and eyes of the subjects as well. With these advancements in AF, photographers in demanding fields such as sports and bird photography will benefit tremendously.

The popular Multi-controller and Quick Control Dial, which were available on the EOS 5D series, can be found on both models that allow quicker selection of AF points and setting change on both cameras.

“We are very excited to unveil our state-of-the-art offerings to consumers as part of our efforts to strengthen the EOS-R System. The launch of these new products is a testament to Canon’s commitment to continue spearheading the innovation in photography and videography, thus delivering unparalleled imaging to our consumers,” said Albert Mah, Head of Imaging Communication Products Division, Canon Marketing Malaysia.

Wildlife, Portrait and Macro Versatility at Your Fingertips

Joining alongside the new cameras, Canon unveiled a trio of RF-mount prime lenses - RF85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM, RF600mm f/11 IS STM, and RF800mm f/11 IS STM. The three fixed focal length lenses will appeal to advanced amateurs, especially those focusing on wildlife, macro or portrait photography. The RF85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM offers more flexibility with its ability to shoot both portraits and macro, while the RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM offer super-telephoto focal lengths of 600mm and 800m respectively at an affordable price.

Breaking the traditional notion that Canon’s EF mount super-telephoto lenses are expensive, large and heavy, the newly developed super-telephoto single focal length lenses are designed to lower the barriers to purchasing super telephotos by making the lenses more affordable, compact and lightweight. This will encourage budding photographers to venture into super-telephoto shooting.

On top of the significant weight reduction, both lenses have a retractable structure which makes them a lot more portable. The RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM are equipped with Canon’s Image Stabilizer feature. The IS function significantly reduces camera shake, which is particularly noticeable in super-telephoto shooting and helps to stabilise the image, making it effective to control focus.

The RF85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM continues Canon’s best-selling EF lens line-up legacy with its large f/2 aperture, with macro function and Image Stabilizer for added performance. The 85mm focal length is ideal for portraits while the large f/2 aperture results in dreamy bokeh and low light shooting capabilities. Up to 8 stops of image stabilisation can be achieved in tandem with the In-Body Image Stabilizer when the lens is used with the Canon EOS R5.

Canon’s First Super-Telephoto L Zoom Lens

Making its debut for the first time for Canon’s EOS R-series full-frame mirrorless cameras is RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM — the first super-telephoto L zoom lens. Designed for professional and advanced amateur photographers, the new lens lets users shoot even further with its focal length of 500mm. The RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is the RF version of the popular EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, which is known for its wide zoom range and versatility across various applications such as sports, wildlife and nature photography, as well as photojournalism.

Apart from the lenses, Canon also introduced two new 1.4x and 2x extenders, the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x — both are compatible with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, RF600mm f/11 IS STM, and RF800mm f/11 IS STM.
